by Beir (above in French) is certainly more
suggestive then that given by the revised edition
of Bloch in "The Picasso Project". This piece was
part of the so called "347 Series" of etchings made
by Picasso in 1968. A group of these illustrated
the work "La Celestine". This was a dramatised
novel in 21 acts, attributed to Fernando de Rojas
who published it in Burgos in 1499. This work is
considered a pivotal piece of Spanish literature.
The plot is a simple one: Calisto is in love with
Melebea who spurns him. His butler, Sempronio,
suggests he pays an elderly lady called Celestina
to act as a go-between and matchmaker. Celestine is
a very devious person who does contrive to approach
Melebea and create a relationship between the two
lovers. Sempronio, however, wants a share of the
bribe money and in a quarrel with Celestina, kills
her. Calisto falls from a ladder and dies - finally
Melebea throws herself from a tower in her fathers
house. The grief stricken parent is left alone then
to bewail his sadness and misfortune. Our etching
depicts one of a series of meeting between Calisto
and Melebia with Sempronio looking on. Picasso was
fascinated by the story and when commissioned to
create a series of etchings for it worked round the
clock to complete them. The finished group of "La
Celestine" etchings consisted of 66
pieces. Published by:

332 .B.d Note: The publication of
the hundred etchings created by Picasso between 1930 and
1937 was one of Ambroise Vollard's most impressive
undertakings. Vollard was one of the greatest art dealers
and publishers of his time and his championship of some of
the most celebrated artists of the day deserves the thanks
of later generations. His artists, to name but a few,
included Cezanne, Renoir, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Rousseau,
Rouault and Picasso. Picasso met Vollard in Paris in 1901
and worked with him over an extended period. When the
Vollard Suite etchings were first made they were in fact
rarely signed (with the exception of some rare proofs made
on vellum in editions of 3). Vollard died tragically in a
car accident in 1939 and eventually, after the Second World
War, most of the Vollard Suite passed into the hands of the
famous Dealer Petiet. Petiet knew that Picasso , would never
sign anything until he was paid for it and the artist
required a substantial fee for putting his signature on the
Vollard Suite etchings. Accordingly Petiet gave his buyers
the option of buying them either unsigned or, for 10% more
on the cost, signed. Thius meant that Picasso signatures
from 1939 until the present day appear on Vollard Suite
etchings. Obviously there is a difference in the artists
signature as he aged. More worrying is the fact that some of
the signatures on authentic Vollard Suite etchings are faked
since this does add greatly to the value of such
pieces. Note on fakes: In recent
years a large body of fakes of Vollard Suite etchings have
been made in Italy and these can fool even some of the more
experienced collectors and dealers. The quality of these is
very good - even down to the watermark. However it should be
noted that all the known fakes from this "School" have
Vollard Signatures in the watermark and never Picasso. It
should also be noted that the fakes never have the
Montgolfier watermark either. Our works come from an
impeccable provenance and are of undoubted
authenticity. Published by: Ambroise
