Game On is one of Jack Vettriano’s most popular limited editions and it sold out quickly when it was first published in 2006 . Jack Vettriano thinks his most famous painting The Singing Butler will be part of the exhibition he is putting together to cover his entire career of 20 years . Sotheby’s auctioneers are helping him track down his best-known paintings, seeking loans from celebrity collectors and anonymous buyers.
Vettriano has, somewhat optimistically , offered what could be a sell-out show to the National Galleries of Scotland, with which he is embroiled in a long-running feud.
It was “mildly short of a disgrace” that NGS had never shown or bought his work for the national collection, he said, adding: “That may be the opportunity for the National Galleries to say, ‘Right, we’ll show this stuff and let the public make their minds up’.”
Vettriano has been on tour in the UK including an appearance at the Aberdeen Music Hall taking questions from up to 800 people. It was something he had never done before, showing the popularity of the so-called “People’s Painter”.
In 1989, the former miner with no formal art training had two paintings accepted by the Royal Scottish Academy’s annual exhibition, which rapidly sold.Vettriano has not stated whether or not Game On will be featured in the exhibition . Jack Vettriano prints

BOB DYLAN has revealed a new string to his artistic bow. He has opened his first exhibition of paintings and drawings.

His song When I Paint My Masterpiece perhaps unfairly increases expectations. Dylan sketches what he sees and so there are rather a lot of hotel bedrooms from what he calls his “never-ending tour” of rock concerts, as well as views from bridges and railway lines and glances of half-seen passers-by.

One of the highlights is a painting of a curvaceous woman viewed by Dylan from behind while he was drinking in the Red Lion pub in Blackpool in 1992.

The exhibition, entitled The Drawn Blank Series, features 170 watercolours and pastel drawings and will run until February at a museum in Chemnitz, in eastern Germany.

Next month, 12,000 people will be turning up at the Edinburgh Art Fair and, while some of them will just be looking for something pretty , others will be looking to make an investment.“As an investment, the value of art can go up spectacularly,” says Edinburgh arts impresario Richard Demarco. “If it’s good art, you can be sure its value will go up and be unstoppable over a period of about ten to 20 years. The lucky few might find tomorrow’s Jack Vettriano in amongst the art on display.

While Vettriano’s painting The Singing Butler set a record for a Scottish artist in 2004 when it sold for £744,800, Demarco advises those serious about an art investment to avoid anything too easy on the eye.
A collector bought an abstract painting called Yellow and Red Circles by Patrick Heron in 1966 for £450 and later sold it for £8000. It sold again at auction for £37,000.

“I have, in my life, never followed the rule that because I have a particular liking for something, that means it’s good,” says Richard. “You’ve got to think, maybe it’s a fault in me that I like that, or maybe I’m liking it for the wrong reasons because I just don’t know enough.

The dispute over the ownership of paintings worth about £50m is detailed in a book, Beaverbrook: A Shattered Legacy, by journalist Jacques Poitras. It’s a riveting, and somewhat sad, tale of a community’s evolution from deference to defiance as it attempts to hold on to the old rogue’s magnificent legacy. “His actions left this terrible mess… that has ended up destroying the relationship between his family and the gallery,” says Poitras.
